Missouri Botanical Garden selected SOA to design two picnic pavilions and a new restroom facility at the Shaw Nature Reserve located in Southwest St. Louis. One of the most notable sustainable design features is the ‘green roof’ that tops the restroom building. Reserve staff use it as a ‘living laboratory,’ and present it as an example of the many sustainable practices they have incorporated. The Missouri Botanical Garden developed a special blend of thirty-three native plants that have been hand sown on the green roof and are now thriving. Additional sustainable features include waterless urinals and low-flow toilets and lighting controlled by occupancy sensors and photocells.
